In a ROMDIEM <\/a><\/strong>interview, historian Professor Milan Koljanin<\/strong> \u2014 head of the Staro Sajmi\u0161te Memorial Center \u2014 reflects on the overlooked history of Roma suffering during the Holocaust and the need for stronger education, research, and remembrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He describes the systematic destruction of Roma communities across Nazi-controlled territories, from Topovske \u0160upe and Banjica to Sajmi\u0161te, where many Roma women and children perished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRoma were among the first labeled \u2018undesirable\u2019 \u2014 marked, deprived of livelihood, and killed, often without any record.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koljanin warns that awareness of Roma suffering remains superficial: \u201cThey are mentioned, but rarely understood.\u201d He urges deeper inclusion of the Roma Holocaust (Samudaripen) in schools, museums, and public memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Projects like ROMDIEM, he says, can help document stories, support research, and amplify Roma voices. \u201cWithout understanding the roots of hatred, we cannot build a culture of solidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
