In an interview for the ROMDIEM<\/strong> <\/a>project, Dr. Krinka Vidakovi\u0107 Petrov, Director of the \u201cStaro Sajmi\u0161te\u201d Memorial Center in Serbia, speaks about the complex history of one of WWII\u2019s most tragic sites\u2014and the urgent need to include Roma victims in public memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Sajmi\u0161te, around 40,000 people were imprisoned and 17,000 murdered\u2014among them Serbs, Jews, Roma, and antifascists. Yet, the suffering of Roma remains the least documented. Dr. Vidakovi\u0107 Petrov highlights the importance of facts, inclusivity, and truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout facts, we cannot build narratives. Our work does not discriminate by nationality, ethnicity, or religion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She reminds us that remembrance in socialist Yugoslavia often erased distinctions among victims. Today, new memorials and plaques are needed to tell the full story\u2014naming all who suffered and ensuring Roma are no longer invisible in history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is time to remember the victims by name\u2014including Roma victims\u2014and give them a dignified place in collective memory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interview also points to ongoing challenges: the lack of Romani museums, archives, and education on the Romani Holocaust. ROMDIEM <\/a><\/strong>seeks to address these gaps\u2014by supporting research, connecting institutions, and strengthening remembrance through education and community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe question isn\u2019t whether we want to know,\u201d says Dr. Vidakovi\u0107 Petrov, \u201cbut who will research it, how we\u2019ll finance it, and how we\u2019ll do it right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
